Earned Wage Access — the ability for employees to access the wages they've already earned before payday — is a category where the product requirements are deceptively complex. The implementation involves payroll cycle ingestion, ledger reconciliation, payment disbursement with idempotency guarantees, integration with STP (Mexico's interbank payment system).
Monto came to Axented in 2021 needing a production-grade MVP in 10 months. They had Y Combinator backing and enterprise clients waiting.
The platform had to scale from MVP to enterprise without a rewrite. Modular production-grade subsystems from day one: onboarding, payroll cycle ingestion, ledger and reconciliation, payment disbursement, and transaction lifecycle management.
We implemented idempotency keys on every payment operation, robust retry logic, and reconciliation workflows. The STP integration was engineered for resilience under partial failures.
Ruby on Rails backend with PostgreSQL. Redis for background jobs. Ionic/Angular hybrid mobile app for iOS and Android. AWS with EC2, RDS, S3, and CloudFront.
